On January 1, 2021, 91-year-old John Merrick Register died in his sleep from complications of a fall at his home in Midlothian, Virginia.

John was born on May 10, 1929 in Layton Bartol and Margaret Duval Register in Haverford, Pennsylvania. He and his brother David spent their childhood in Haverford and graduated from Haverford School in 1947. In 1951, John went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. During the college summer, John worked as a camp consultant at Camp Choconut in Friendsville, Pennsylvania. There, he met his future wife Joanna G. Logan (Joanna G. Logan). They married shortly after graduating from John University in June 1951 and moved to Brynmore. Soon after, he began his 38-year banking career, working part-time at Girard Trust Company and later Girard Trust Corn Exchange Bank. In 1952, he and his wife moved from Bryn Mawr to Chestnut Hill. He retired from Mellon Bank in 1989 as a senior trust officer and moved to Washington, North Carolina.

John is a man who cultivated a lot of interest and pursued passionately throughout his life. After graduation, he never lost his love for Harvard University, and this year he will celebrate his 70th reunion. He is an avid bird watcher, amateur astronomer, naturalist, photographer and carpenter. He likes to share his interests with children. They learned to make model ice boats with toothpicks, collect butterflies and moths, use bows and arrows, identify birds, play dominoes, and engage in epic battles with salvaged ball bearings. Knock down the toy soldier pachinko machine-everything happened before his kid went to high school.

After retirement, John was baptized in the Anglican Church. He became a frequent visitor to the Bishop's Church in Zion, Washington, North Carolina, where he volunteered to serve as treasurer and the warden of the church. Old friends all know Reg, and everyone else knows that he is John. He is a gentleman who is friendly, smart, and willing to help neighbors and friends. In particular, he is a source of information about the flora and fauna seen in Goose Creek State Park in Palmyco Bay, North Carolina, where he spent many happy years after retirement.

John and his wife moved to Spring Arbor, Salisbury, Midlothian, Virginia in April 2017 when they were unable to live independently in North Carolina. Mr. Register's wife, Joanna, is 69 years old. Their son Christopher and daughter-in-law Katie are from Farmville, Virginia; their daughter Anne and son-in-law Tom Whitehair are from Irvine, California, and a grandson, Christian Whitehair of Newport Beach, and his fiancee Kailarin Sai Smith. John died before his parents and his brother David.

The memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at the Bishop of Zion in Washington, North Carolina. It will be buried in the neighbouring church cemetery of Zion.
